STARWOOD VETERINARIAN PRACTICES INTERNATIONALLY

We are so fortunate in the Bay Area where there are resources to provide excellent care for our horses. In developing countries, many families depend on horses for daily necessities such as hauling water or transporting lumber. With limited resources, it is difficult to provide these animals with optimal veterinary care. A simple lameness for the family horse could mean the entire family has no income or food for the week. World Vets, a nonprofit organization providing global veterinary aid, recognizes the importance of the One Health concept in which health of humans, animals, & their ecosystems are inextricably linked. Their work helps animals, people, and the communities in which they live.

World Vets has been providing free veterinary care for the working horses of Nicaragua for almost a decade. These horses are often in the greatest of need and would otherwise not have access to veterinary care. In January, Dr. Kristy Moding spent ten days in Nicaragua helping to provide care for approximately 500 horses. She provided an array of services, including hoof trimming, dental floating, vaccinations, deworming, wound treatments and horse-owner education. Dr. Kristy has now worked with this program on three occasions and is a witness of the invaluable impact it has made on working horses and their families!​
